ART in Govt Kanya School Mahemdabad Jan 30,2011
Atraumatic Restorative Treatment using the GIC filling material and extraction of the deciduous teeth was performed in 32 students of the Govt Kanya Schala (Govt Girls School) with the full consent of parents and the class teachers. About 7 very anxious children were treated seperately after the apron and mask was removed by the volunteer dentist , since it was adding to the Odontophobia in these rural children. Only the gloves were used as barrier methods and the dental treatment was done in presence of Parents and Teacher, this lead to the successful completion of the ART in the Child who was initially not allowing the dentist even to touch his teeth? In the camp situation followings steps are a must to reduce the anxiety
1. Seperate the children who exhibit inordinate dental anxiety
2. Ask the teacher / Parent to be present during treatment
3. Remove your white doctors apron and mask , but keep the gloves-being in street clothes assuages the fear complex
4. Back it with dental education immediately and use some kind of reward system for children participating in the program - in this case each was given a cup of ice cream.
Seen in these pictures are teachers of Govt Kanya Shaala , Dr Hiren, Dr Bhumi and Dr Bhumika. All of whom are doing volunteer work at Mahemdabad under the guidance of Professor Durgesh Bailoor. The cost for this camp is borne by local charity headed by Mr Dilip Bhai Choksey who provide us space, boiling water and medications.

If the doctors all over India give service at least once a week and work with NGOs , it will go a long way to alleviate the health problems faced by Rural India. We all have to partner with Govt and NGOs to render a humanistic service where the lacunae exist.

water and betadine is provided for proper infection control. We see Dr Bailoor and Mr Mehta in this blog with the plaque of the institution behind them on dec 12 2010.
ART atruamatic Restorative treatment with Glass ionmer cement is being planned for the students of government school in the coming months and we hope to help the schools in other ways by providing books, school bags and black boards etc to those who need it.
This is planned to be a comprehensive social service program with emphasis on dental and hygiene instructions. Free extractions, antibiotics, analgesics and ZOE dressings for carious lesions is part of the phase I of this program.
This program provides a platform for the postgraduate students of Karnavati School of Dentistry to visit rural areas deep in kheda district and understand how the dental problems are being faced by the poor and underprivileged in contrast to five star hospitals in Ahemdabad and other cities in India where the rich and the insured spend lakhs of rupees in just diagnostics.
Only individual efforts by service minded doctors and NGO's can make a difference in alleviation of the health care in the poor and suffering in hinterland of India.

Cross Infection control in Mahemdabad Camp
Dr Durgesh Bailoor, Dr Sonali , Dr Hiren were working at the mahemadabad camp at Kheda district in Gujarat. All care for cross infection control was taken and treatment was rendered in rational and scientific manner.
Hand held powerful rechargable torch was held by Sonali and Dr Durgesh was fully attired with stethoscope for total care of the dental patients.
It was indeed a wonderful experience working with the rural brethren of Mahemdabad. More than 200 patients were examined and half of them treated .
What have u done for the poor recently?
This area is one of the areas in which very poor people are staying and they suffer from multitude of health problems = poor dental care is among them - every alternate sunday a group of doctors lead by Dr Durgesh Bailoor are planning to work among the inhabitants of Mahemdabad and give their free service in form of extractions and Zoe dressings for poor and school children. Dr Hiren , Dr Vivek and Dr Bhumi have decided to be a team to do free work in the area. We may think of extending things beyond the dental care and see what more we can do ? this sensitivity to understanding the social responsibility is the first step to higher emotional intelligence and becoming a responsible Indian citizen with human touch .
